The history of thrillers.

Thrillers are a genre of film (and tv programming) that uses tension and suspence as its main elements. The definiton of a thriller is "A novel, play, or movie with an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage." A thriller film will stimulate the viewers moods in a level of anticipation, uncertainty, excitement, tension and terror. Thrillers often contain literary devices like 'red herrings' and 'cliff hangers', these keep the viewer hooked and wanting to watch more. Most thrillers are villian-driven plots often containing ransoms, revenege, kidnaps, etc..

CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF THRILLER FILMS:
Thriller films will most likely contain a male antagonist with a female protaganist, the females life is put in danger to the point of no escape. What make thrillers most intriging is the music and editing used in them. Creepy, sullen music is often used in a thriller at a point where the viewer will not notice it but feel the tension build. Editing is thrillers is often tracking and panning at the beginning. Close ups are the most typically used as the zone in on objects that may be poinunt to the film later on. Low angles and high angles are used alot in thrillers to make certain things in the film appear small and innocent and others big and scary. Jump cuts are also used alot in thrillers to build tension and give the audience an idea of what could happen in the film, the climax builds greatly via this idea. The sound in thriller films is more likely to non diegetic that plays in the background.

Week 12

We have edited all of our film together and added titles, we've also started to look at music choices. On Sunday (4.12.11) we will do some re-filming of the outside shots.

On Friday Mike Smith came in to talk to us about audience and taught about segmenting audiences, we learnt about how to appeal to a certain age range, gender, social class etc... We were given statistics of some televison programmes and from those we could work out what type of people watched particular types of programmes. We also learnt about the "ABC" system of people and Acorn. It was an interesting session which I learnt alot from.
